Dried fruit: compare ingredients, then choose.

Compare dried fruit by added sugar, sulfites, oils, and processing.

What our research found about dried fruit

Dried fruit concentrates sugar and calories, so serving sizes are small and labels matter. Some products add sugar (cranberries are commonly sweetened), oils to prevent sticking, or sulfur dioxide to keep color; the ingredient list will show it. Unsweetened dates, figs and mulberries are typically one ingredient. Fruit powders and superfood blends are a different format from whole dried fruit.

Harvard’s Nutrition Source treats whole fruit as the benchmark and notes that dried fruit is easy to overeat, so compare per-ounce sugar, fiber and added ingredients. If you are sensitive to sulfites, look for sulfur dioxide or sulfites in the list, which is why many brown (unsulfured) fruits are labeled that way.

What to compare

  • Added sugar. Sweetened cranberries and tart cherries list sugar or juice concentrate.
  • Sulfites. Look for sulfur dioxide or sulfites if you are sensitive.
  • Oil coating. Some raisins and fruit pieces are coated with oil.
  • Serving size. A serving is small; compare sugar per ounce.

Unknown and stale evidence never passes “Only show matches.” The clean score is strict and needs no setup: nine additive groups on the current label plus verified organic and sourcing claims; without them a product cannot reach 100. It is not a nutrition, allergy, or safety rating.

“Buy on Amazon” opens a reviewed product listing; “Search on Amazon” opens an Amazon search for the product, so pick the exact match yourself. Confirm the package, seller, availability, and current price before checkout. Buying links do not influence ingredient results.

The clean score is strict and needs no setup: nine additive groups not found in a current ingredient statement, plus a verified organic claim (and a grass-fed or pasture-raised claim for animal foods), are needed for 100; a possible match earns half and a missing claim earns nothing. Missing or expired evidence stays unknown. It does not assess nutrition, allergies, contaminants, or safety.
